TL;DR: If you are a nervous pee'er and have trouble urinating in front of a monitored/supervised drug test, you can safely consume 48 oz water before your first pee of the day and will barely be able to hold it 2 hours later, even if someone is watching, and not have to worry about dilution at all (unless you are vegan). If your test is later in the day, a cup of water every 3-4 hours without peeing and then 32oz of water 2 hours before will be enough to make you have to pee if someone is watching as well and still not have to worry about dilution. We've all been there if we've been on probation, especially the first time, thinking, "What!? This dudes going to be staring at my junk while peeing"? You've been clean and your not worried about failing your drug test, you just don't like the idea of someone watching you pee. While this is a nuisance for most people, there are a large number of people who simply have trouble urinating in front of someone and it is so bad in some people, they simply aren't able to pee at all or the only way they can force their self to pee is to drink a ton of water beforehand, both of which results in a technical fail due to either not providing a sample or providing a diluted sample.

TL;DR: Unfortunately, Dilution is not a very effective method to pass an ETG test if you have been drinking due to ETS (Ethyl Sulfate) and Creatinine being used in determining a persons nominal ETG levels. So, you're on probation and have been rarely getting tested due to COVID and you decide to chance drinking on a Friday and Saturday night and get notified Sunday night by your probation officer that you have an ETG test on Monday morning at 7am. You've checked the ETG Level Calculator and it is showing that there is no chance you are going to pass. Will using the urine dilution method work?
TL;DR: For your average person of about 180 lbs, you will be able to pass an ETG test by 16 hours after consumption of one beer. If you've had two beers, your ETG will be approximately 250ng/ml 24 hours later which is a pass for standard ETG Tests with a 500ng/ml cuttoff. After 28 hours, you will be at 99ng/ml which is below the 100ng/ml but cutting it close. One of the most common questions seen for alcohol tests are centered around, "What are my ETG Levels after 2 or 3 beers" and "Will I fail my ETG Alcohol test if I had a beer the night before" and other questions in the similar vain. As pervasive as the 80 hour myth for detecting ETG is, this is only true for extremely large amounts of alcohol such as having a fifth of high proof spirits (e.g. vodka/whiskey) in one night.
For a single beer consumed for a person of average weight (180lbs), they will almost certainly always be clear to pass an ETG test after 16 hours of consumption and their ETG Levels after 2 beers 24 hours later will be around 250ng/ml and their ETG Levels after 3 beers will be about 550ng/ml and down to 450ng/ml (pass for 500ng/ml cuttoff) 25 hours after consumption. This is a far cry from the often touted 80 hour detection time frames mentioned by drug testing companies and courts/probation departments. While it is true that it is possible to detect ETG Levels above 500ng/ml for 80 hours, this is only true after consuming extremely large quantities of alcohol to the point that one has thrown caution to the wind and is not concerned with failing an ETG Alcohol/Drug test. TL;DR: Hand sanitizer will not make you fail an ETG Test unless you are huffing a large amount of it 6 hours prior to your drug test. No, the resounding short answer is NO. The long answer is still NO 99.9% of the time, even if you are a nurse applying hand sanitizer every 10 minutes for a 16 hours shift. The only rare combination that will lead to a false positive while using hand sanitizer is to have been lathering it on you all day for hours and hours up until an hour or so before your your test while ALSO being on the 100ng/ml cutoff opposed to the standard 500ng/ml cutoff and even then it is still very difficult to fail. You may be saying "why is this though" or "a friend of mine failed after only using hand sanitizer" or my attorney said it's possible to fail an ETG test for hand sanitizer. TL;DR: Yes, your ETG Levels can be calculated approximately and Yes, the "80 Hour" myth is mostly a myth. The good news with ETG Testing (if you slip up and have a drink when you are not supposed to) is that it is possible to calculate your ETG Levels after the consumption of alcohol with tools like this ETG Calculator with taking into account the number of drinks you have consumed, the time period which you consumed them, your weight and using the the high end of the accepted half-life for ETG in the human body.
It is important to note that the 80 hour myth of being able to detect ETG levels is only true for people who have consumed an extremely large amount of alcohol (e.g. a fifth of vodka in one night). We will go into a high level detail on how ETG levels can be calculated below. TL;DR: ETG (Ethyl Glucuronide) is produced by your body when you drink alcohol (ethanol). ETG Alcohol tests are now standard for probation/court orders and looks for ETG to see if you've consumed alcohol. ETG testing is the analysis of typically your urine or blood (but sometimes hair and nails) for the presence of ETG (Ethyl Glucuronide) and is typically used by the court/judicial system to determine if a person has recently consumed Alcohol. Most often this related to crimes that have to do with alcohol such as DUI, DWI, and Public Intoxication but in many jurisdictions, ETG tests to determine your ETG Levels are used for any offense for which one can be places on probation. That's great and all you are probably saying, but what is ETG?
